The World Cup is international soccer’s biggest stage and the stars are shining brightly in 2019. The top 20 teams from around the world made their way to France for the Women’s World Cup this summer. So far we have seen both David and Goliath prevail and as head into the final week of the tournament, the world should be ready for a show. 

The World Cup has brought some amazing goals thus far and from that, some clear front runners for the coveted Golden Boot race. The Golden Boot is awarded to the tournaments top goal scorer and we have quite the race going as we head into the final two matches. One of the game’s most notorious goal scorers, Alex Morgan has positioned herself atop the golden boot race with 6 goals scored. While 5 of her goals were scored in their first group stage game against Thailand, you shouldn't underestimate her. She secured the game-winning goal to send her team to the World Cup final. Morgan has historically been known for her goal-scoring prowess but has evolved her game over the last couple of years to be more than just that.

Alex Morgan is returning to France and to her old home stadium, Lyon, for their final games of the World Cup. Morgan played for Olympique Lyonnais in 2017, a powerhouse women’s team located in Lyon, France. She will look to continue her scoring dominance at a field that is very familiar to her. 

The world should expect a determined, focused Alex Morgan the rest of the tournament. Oh, and some more goals as well.

A tenacious goal scorer who has the unique ability to always find the back of the net will look to stay at the top of the Golden Boot race with the American duo of Rapinoe and Morgan as the two countries face off in a semi-final match. Ellen White has been scoring goals consistently throughout the tournament and finds her self in the right place at the right time to give her team the edge. Her 6 goals put her in second place after Morgan, with the tiebreaker being assists, Morgan has 3.

Her ability to score goals isn’t the only thing we will remember about her this World Cup, her unique celebration each time she scores might be just as notable. White gives credit to one of her favorite players, Anthony Modeste, who is a striker in the Bundesliga. She supports his team and him as a player and decided to showcase that during the World Cup. Lucky for us, she just keeps on scoring, so we get to enjoy the celebration just as much as we do the goals. 

Ellen White will look to continue her goal-scoring shred in the third-place match after securing a goal in the loss to the United States in the semi-final.

Yes, you read that right, another American at the top of the Golden Boot race. Megan Rapinoe, the pink haired wonder woman has been making a statement in the knockout stage games for the United States. She sits tied at the top of the race with 6 goals, but unlike Morgan, her goals have come a bit later and at times where her team needed them the most.

Rapinoe is known for her ability to beat defenders off the dribble and provide quality balls into the box for her teammates to get on the end of, but this World Cup, she has found herself on the other end. Rapinoe has put the entire country on her back by scoring both goals in their two knockout stage wins against Spain and France. 

A veteran on the team in her third World Cup, Rapinoe will look to continue her streak of goals as they move into their match against England for a chance to play for a World Cup. What would be sweeter than winning a World Cup? Winning a second World Cup in back to back years. Megan Rapinoe and the United States will look to do just that.

The dark horse in this year's race for the Golden Boot is the Dutch striker, Vivianne Miedema. Miedema is no stranger to goal scoring as she is the countries top goal scorer with 60 goals in her international career. The 22-year-old has cemented herself into the history books with her two goals against Cameroon this World Cup, which catapulted her to the top of the Dutch record books.

She will look to continue her goal-scoring campaign in the Netherlands semi-final matchup against Sweden, a tough, smart defensive side. While Miedema only has three goals throughout the tournament thus far, she is the final player on our watch list as her team still has a chance to continue moving forward. Two goals next game can launch her right back into the mix, so keep your eyes out for this young, impressive talent from the Netherlands.
